Banking & Neobanking AI Visibility & GEO Readiness Report India 2026
About the Banking & Neobanking AI Visibility & GEO Readiness Report
The Banking & Neobanking AI Visibility & GEO Readiness Report benchmarks how banks and neobank brands in India are discovered, mentioned, compared and recommended across leading AI search and answer engines. Findings are drawn from an analysis of 1.75 million AI answers collected over 7 days, in response to category-specific, use-case and intent-driven queries measuring AI visibility, share of voice, recommendation quality, consistency, citation authority and owned-source influence. This report is one entry in GoVISIBLE's AI Visibility Index India 2026.
What Does This Report Measure?
This report reflects how AI engines answer use-case and intent-driven prompts within Banking & Neobanking, such as “best bank for a zero-balance savings account” or “which neobank app is best for expense tracking in India,” not generic brand-awareness or “top banks” rankings. A bank's AI Readiness standing here can legitimately differ from how it would rank on a broad prompt like “top 10 banks in India”, since the prompt universe and the behaviors measured (discovery, mention, comparison, recommendation) are different, not because either measurement is wrong.
Who Is This Report For?
This report is built for marketing leaders, managers and specialists at banks, neobanks and fintech-adjacent brands, and for the agencies and PR/comms teams who support them, deciding whether and where to invest in GEO/AEO (Generative Engine Optimization / Answer Engine Optimization). It spans brand, SEO, GEO, content, digital, performance, growth and product marketing roles, as well as category-specific functions such as retail and business-banking product teams who need to understand how their category, brand and competitors appear and get recommended across AI search and answer platforms.
| Term | In one line |
|---|---|
| Mention % | Share of tracked AI conversations in which the brand appeared at all. |
| Share of Voice (SOV) % | Brand's mentions as a share of all brand mentions in the category. |
| GEO Quality % | How favorably and forcefully AI talks about the brand once it appears. |
| Engine Favorability % | The same favorability formula, applied at the AI-engine level. |
| Consistency % | How reliably a brand or engine's signal repeats across runs. |
Note on quadrant charts: cutoff lines in every quadrant chart in this report are medians of the specific pool of brands plotted in that chart, not a fixed category-wide threshold. Different quadrant charts in this report (Sections 3 and 9) plot different brand pools and so use different cutoffs, even where the same brand's underlying numbers are identical.
How AI-Ready Is the Banking & Neobanking Market?
Banking & Neobanking sits at a 63.4% GEO Readiness Score, the composite of visibility, quality, consistency, citation readiness and owned-source influence. It is a category where AI already has clear opinions about who leads, even though no single brand has locked up the conversation.
HDFC Bank leads outright on reach, appearing far more often in tracked AI conversations than any rival. But GEO Quality, how favorably AI talks about a brand once it shows up, belongs to IDFC FIRST Bank, whose 60.1% quality score sits well clear of HDFC's 46.4%. Owned Source Influence of just 4.8% means AI is still forming its opinions about this category almost entirely from third-party sources, not brand-owned content, which is the clearest headroom signal in this snapshot.
The 73.8% Gini-based Visibility Concentration figure and the 49.9% Market Concentration % in Section 4 measure different things and are not directly comparable: the former is a Gini-style concentration read on the full visibility distribution, the latter is the simple combined Share of Voice of the top 5 brands. Both point toward an unsettled category, but from different angles.
Which Banking & Neobanking Brands Lead AI Visibility and Recommendation Quality?
The volume leader is not the quality leader here, and the gap between them is the story. HDFC Bank leads on share of voice at 12.9%, while IDFC FIRST Bank leads on trust at 60.1% GEO Quality, a 13.7pp quality gap over HDFC Bank's own 46.4% score that says reach and recommendation strength are being won by different brands in this category.
Kotak Bank backs up IDFC FIRST Bank's lead with 57.9% quality on a smaller 7.1% share of voice, suggesting a small cluster of banks are earning stronger AI endorsement without HDFC Bank's or SBI Bank's scale. ICICI Bank and SBI Bank cluster close together on both axes, effectively tied on quality (47.4% vs. 46.7%) while trailing HDFC Bank on reach.
AI Visibility vs Recommendation Quality: Where Do Brands Stand in Banking & Neobanking?
Plotting share of voice against GEO Quality for the top 10 brands shows a market split roughly down the middle. HDFC Bank, SBI Bank and ICICI Bank sit in the Leaders quadrant, combining above-median reach with above-median quality. IDFC FIRST Bank and Kotak Bank land in Niche Quality: strong trust signal, but reach that hasn't caught up. Axis Bank and Bank of India fall into High Noise, with more reach than the quality behind it can currently support, while AU Bank, Jupiter and IndusInd Bank sit in Laggards on both axes among this top-10 set.
IndusInd Bank's GEO Quality sits 26.5 points behind the category leader, IDFC FIRST Bank (33.6% vs. 60.1%), the widest quality gap among the brands with meaningful reach in this dataset.
Full quadrant membership (broader tracked brand set)
- Leaders: HDFC Bank, SBI Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, IDFC FIRST Bank, Kotak Bank, AU Bank, Jupiter.
- Niche Quality: HSBC India, Equitas Small Finance Bank, Union Bank of India, Utkarsh Small Finance Bank, Standard Chartered Bank.
- High Noise: Bank of India, IndusInd Bank, Federal Bank, Punjab National Bank, Niyo Bharat.
- Laggards: DBS Bank, Canara Bank, Ujjivan Small Finance Bank, Suryoday Small Finance Bank, Bandhan Bank, Apple Pay, DCB Bank, Open Money.
This full-set grouping (from the source dataset's own quadrant classification) covers brands beyond the 10 plotted above, including niche and business-banking-adjacent names; their quadrant placement here does not imply they share the same plotted coordinates as the top 10.
How Concentrated Is AI Visibility in the Banking & Neobanking Market?
The top 5 brands command 49.9% of total AI visibility in this category, leaving the remaining 50.1% spread across the long tail of tracked banks and neobanks. That is a roughly even split between incumbent scale and everyone else, not the kind of runaway concentration that would suggest AI has already picked its favorites. There is real room here for a challenger brand with a sharper GEO strategy to move the needle.
Which AI Engines Matter Most for Banking & Neobanking Brand Visibility?
Copilot is the most frequently surfaced engine in this category's tracked conversations, carrying 27.9% of mention share, just ahead of ChatGPT at 23.4% and Google AI Mode at 21.2%. But mention volume and generosity of tone are not the same thing: ChatGPT is the most positive engine, delivering favorable sentiment in 40.0% of its brand mentions, ahead of Copilot's 38.1% and Google AI Mode's 37.9%.
Perplexity trails on every measure here: 9.0% mention share, the lowest positive sentiment (14.6%), and the lowest Engine Favorability % (27.1%), making it the least useful engine to prioritize for a Banking & Neobanking GEO strategy right now.
Which AI Engines Show the Most Consistent Brand Recommendations?
Google AI Mode currently provides the most stable visibility signal in this dataset at 81.8% Engine Consistency, narrowly ahead of ChatGPT (80.4%) and Copilot (78.5%). Perplexity's answers are noticeably more volatile at 72.4% consistency, so a strong Perplexity result today is less likely to repeat than a strong result on Google AI Mode.
Which brand each engine favors most
| Engine | Rank | Brand | Engine Share % | Favorability % |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 1st | HDFC Bank | 12.8% | 48.2% |
| ChatGPT | 2nd | SBI Bank | 11.8% | 44.4% |
| ChatGPT | 3rd | ICICI Bank | 11.2% | 49.2% |
| Copilot | 1st | HDFC Bank | 13.7% | 49.4% |
| Copilot | 2nd | SBI Bank | 12.8% | 50.0% |
| Copilot | 3rd | ICICI Bank | 11.2% | 47.9% |
| Gemini | 1st | Bank of India | 11.7% | 34.2% |
| Gemini | 2nd | HDFC Bank | 11.2% | 37.8% |
| Gemini | 3rd | ICICI Bank | 9.7% | 44.4% |
| Google AI Mode | 1st | HDFC Bank | 12.8% | 52.4% |
| Google AI Mode | 2nd | IDFC FIRST Bank | 10.6% | 63.7% |
| Google AI Mode | 3rd | Bank of India | 8.6% | 42.2% |
| Perplexity | 1st | SBI Bank | 14.6% | 30.8% |
| Perplexity | 2nd | HDFC Bank | 13.9% | 34.2% |
| Perplexity | 3rd | ICICI Bank | 13.4% | 35.5% |
Gemini stands out as the one engine whose top pick isn't HDFC Bank: it favors Bank of India first, though at a comparatively modest 34.2% favorability. Google AI Mode is also the only engine giving IDFC FIRST Bank a top-3 slot, and at 63.7% that's the single highest engine-brand favorability score anywhere in this table.
How Consistent Are AI Brand Recommendations in Banking & Neobanking?
HDFC Bank and Axis Bank don't just appear once. Both show up in 100.0% of runs with perfect consecutive retention, making them the most dependable presences in AI answers for this category, and five more brands, Kotak Bank, SBI Bank, Bank of India, ICICI Bank and IDFC FIRST Bank, sit at 97–99% Brand Consistency, effectively tied as Stable Leaders.
RBL Bank, AU Bank and IndusInd Bank sit apart at 55–65% consistency, flagged here as Moderate rather than Stable Leaders. A brand appearing once is not the same as a brand AI repeatedly recommends, and these three should be read as lower-confidence, directional signals rather than settled positions.
Which Brands Win Across Different Buyer Intents and Journeys?
HDFC Bank wins every stage of the buyer journey by mention volume, Awareness, Consideration and Decision alike, and the same is true across Navigational, Commercial and Informational intent. Mention volume, not the quality score shown in the table below, is what determines the journey and intent winner in this methodology.
| Journey / Intent | Brand | Quality % |
|---|---|---|
| Awareness | HDFC Bank | 32.4% |
| Consideration | HDFC Bank | 58.2% |
| Decision | HDFC Bank | 25.7% |
HDFC Bank's own quality score tells a more interesting story than its journey-stage dominance alone: quality climbs sharply from 32.4% at Awareness to 58.2% at Consideration, then falls back to 25.7% at Decision. AI is most enthusiastic about HDFC Bank mid-journey and noticeably more equivocal right at the point of decision, even though HDFC Bank still wins that stage on sheer mention volume.
Persona / cluster winners
| Cluster | Brand | Mention Share % | Quality % |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neobank Adopter | Jupiter | 20.2% | 34.0% |
| Traditional Bank Loyalist | HDFC Bank | 16.7% | 54.3% |
| Young Professional & Salary Account Seeker | HDFC Bank | 16.4% | 57.4% |
| Convenience & Speed Focused | HDFC Bank | 16.1% | 57.7% |
| Security & Trust Conscious | HDFC Bank | 15.7% | 52.8% |
| Cost-Conscious Budget Seeker | SBI Bank | 13.8% | 66.0% |
| Savings & Investment Seeker | IDFC FIRST Bank | 11.0% | 53.2% |
Jupiter is the one persona segment HDFC Bank doesn't own: among Neobank Adopters, Jupiter leads with 20.2% mention share, a reminder that HDFC Bank's dominance is strongest with traditional and salary-account-driven personas, not digital-first neobank users.
Where Is the Biggest AI Visibility Opportunity in Banking & Neobanking?
Standard Chartered Bank already earns AI's trust at 55.0% GEO Quality without spending on reach (0.4% share of voice), the fastest lever here is visibility, not credibility. Union Bank of India (39.1% quality) and Utkarsh Small Finance Bank (42.0% quality) sit in the same Hidden Gems position, all three earning above-median trust on a fraction of the leaders' reach.
GEO Leaders, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and SBI Bank, show the strongest trust signal at 45.0% average GEO Quality among this top-brand pool, while also controlling the highest visibility share within that pool at 76.2%. At the other end, Federal Bank, IndusInd Bank and Punjab National Bank all carry similar visibility (around 2.0% share of voice each) but noticeably weaker trust, in the 23–33% quality range: reach without the recommendation strength to back it up. Apple Pay sits furthest into Low Priority, combining low reach (0.7% SOV) with the lowest GEO Quality in this dataset at 4.8%.
Which Sources Do AI Engines Trust When Recommending Banking & Neobanking Brands?
Who Does AI Trust? Business websites supply 60.9% of what AI cites in this category, by far the largest single source type, with idfcfirst.bank.in, hdfc.bank.in and axis.bank.in as the most-cited individual domains within it. News & media sources (Forbes, Investopedia, India Times) add another 10.3%, and review/comparison platforms like Bankrate and NerdWallet contribute 8.4%.
A brand's own website is only one part of its AI reputation. Business websites lead the citation mix, but review/comparison platforms, aggregator sites like BankBazaar and PaisaBazaar, and government/NGO sources such as RBI's own site together account for a meaningful share of what shapes AI's answers, which means the information ecosystem around a brand matters as much as the brand's own content.
How Dependent Is Banking & Neobanking on Third-Party Sources for AI Visibility?
AI discovery in this category is 95.2% dependent on third-party sources, with brands earning an average of just 4.8% of their citations from their own domains. Brands investing in their own site's AI-citability have real headroom, since almost the entire citation pool currently comes from sources the brand doesn't control.
IDFC FIRST Bank leads on owned-source influence at 9.9%, nearly double AU Bank's 8.5% and well ahead of HDFC Bank's 6.8%, despite HDFC Bank's much larger overall visibility. SBI Bank sits at the opposite end at just 0.8%, its AI presence is almost entirely built on what other sites say about it, not its own domain.
Engine citation load
| Engine | Avg Citations / Prompt | Citation Share % | Third-Party Dependency % |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 17.1 | 34.7% | 91.7% |
| Google AI Mode | 12.3 | 25.0% | 89.6% |
| Perplexity | 10.0 | 20.2% | 99.1% |
| Gemini | 5.5 | 11.2% | 88.7% |
| Copilot | 4.4 | 8.9% | 94.4% |
ChatGPT cites nearly four times as many sources per prompt as Copilot (17.1 vs. 4.4), which makes it the engine with the deepest citation trail in this category, even though Perplexity is the most third-party-dependent of all five at 99.1%.
What Should Banking & Neobanking Brands Do About Their AI Visibility?
HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank are AI's most common comparison pair at 66.4% co-mention association, just ahead of HDFC Bank and SBI Bank at 61.4%. AI treats these three as each other's default substitutes far more than any other combination in the category.
AI hasn't decided who owns Banking & Neobanking yet.
The top 5 brands command just 49.9% of visibility, while the strongest GEO Quality scores in the category (IDFC FIRST Bank at 60.1%, Kotak Bank at 57.9%) belong to brands well outside that top-5 reach tier. The brands winning the AI conversation are not the same brands winning the AI endorsement.
The category is still wide open.
Just 49.9% of Share of Voice sits with the top 5 brands, leaving over half the visibility spread across a long tail of banks, neobanks and small finance banks.
A challenger with a focused GEO content push has real room to move up the visibility ranking without unseating an entrenched incumbent first.
→ If a brand outside the top 5 invested seriously in GEO today, how much of that 50.1% could it realistically claim?
Reach and trust are being won by different brands.
HDFC Bank leads visibility at 12.9% SOV, but IDFC FIRST Bank leads GEO Quality at 60.1%, a 13.7pp gap over HDFC Bank's own 46.4% quality score.
Scaling reach without also improving the substance of AI's answer risks growing visibility that reads as noise rather than endorsement.
→ Is the brand optimizing for AI mentioning it more often, or for AI recommending it more strongly?
AI's opinion of the category rests almost entirely on other people's words.
Owned Source Influence sits at just 4.8% across the category, meaning 95.2% of what shapes AI's answers comes from third-party sites, not brand-owned domains.
Content published on comparison sites, aggregators and financial media currently shapes AI's view of a brand more than the brand's own site does.
→ Where does the brand's content currently show up in that third-party ecosystem, and where is it absent?
Engine choice changes the story.
Google AI Mode is the most stable engine at 81.8% consistency, but Gemini is the only engine whose top pick isn't HDFC Bank, favoring Bank of India instead.
A single-engine view of AI visibility can miss where a brand is already winning, or losing, on a specific platform.
→ Has the brand checked its standing on each engine individually, or only on an averaged, blended score?
HDFC Bank's AI endorsement weakens exactly where it matters most.
HDFC Bank's GEO Quality peaks at 58.2% during Consideration but falls to 25.7% at Decision, even though it wins all three journey stages on mention volume.
Winning the mention count at the Decision stage isn't the same as winning the recommendation. That gap is where a competitor's GEO content could make the most difference.
→ What is AI actually saying about the brand at the moment a customer is ready to choose?
What This Means
| Brand Posture | Strategic Label | Question to Ask |
|---|---|---|
| High reach, high quality (HDFC Bank, SBI Bank, ICICI Bank) | Leaders | How does the brand extend its lead rather than just defend it? |
| Low reach, high quality (IDFC FIRST Bank, Kotak Bank) | Niche Quality | What would it take to convert existing trust into broader visibility? |
| High reach, low quality (Axis Bank, Bank of India) | High Noise | Is the brand's AI presence building credibility, or just volume? |
| Low reach, low quality (AU Bank, Jupiter, IndusInd Bank) | Laggards | Is this a genuine gap, or a low-sample signal that needs more data first? |
